Blog 16: Interview

Lead:  I am doing research to determine if music influences how people write.  I am interested in the experiences of college students who will graduate with a degree in English or Journalism.

Warm-up questions:
-How old are you?
-How long have you been a student at Kean?
-What is your major at Kean?
-Have you always been an English major?
-As an English major, are you concentrating on a specific area?
-Have you had any musical training?

Foreshadowing:
-How long have you been writing for?
-Have you taken any writing classes at Kean?
     *if so, what have you taken?
-Have you taken any writing courses/seminars outside of Kean?
-What type of writing do you do?
     *creative, poetry, nonfiction, fiction, journalism
-Is there a specific place you like to write at?
-How long do you normally write for?
-How do you normally write?
     *pen and pad or on a computer
-Do you listen to music?
     *What genre of music do you listen to?
-What is your favorite type of music?
      *Is there a specific reason why you enjoy this type of music?
-How often do you listen to music?
-What other activities to do you do while listening to music?
      *Why?  Do is help you work out harder?  Does it help you study better?
-Do you prefer to listen to music while your headphones are on or over speakers?
      *Why? Do you do the same when you are writing?
-Do you listen to music when you do schoolwork?
      *Why?
      *if so, what schoolwork are you doing when you are listening to music?
-Do you listen to music when you write?
     *if so, what type/genre of music?  Also, did you listen with your headphones or over the computer's speakers?
-Do you have a specific playlist or cd you listen to while writing?
-Do you remember when you started listening to music when you were writing?
-Do you think music can evoke emotions?
      *if so, how?

Main Section of Interview:
-Tell me a story about a time when you wrote while listening to music.
     *What music where you listening to?(i.e. playlist, cd, band, artist)
     *How did you feel when you were writing to music?
     *How did music affect your writing(creativity, word usage, sentence length, fluidity)?
     *If it was for school, do you remember the grade you received on your paper?
-Did listening to music have any effect on brainstorming, drafting, or revising?
     *If so, how?
-Do you think it helps with your writing?
-Do you normally listen to the same song or genre of music when you write?
-Have you ever listened to music you were unfamiliar with while you wrote?
      *if so, how did if affect your writing?
-Have you ever written parts of a song into your paper by accident?

-Tell me a story about a time when you wrote without music.
     *How did not listening to music affect your writing?
     *If it was for school, do you remember the grade you received on your paper?
     *How did you feel when you were writing without music? (nervous, hesitant, had writer's block)

-Have you ever stopped writing to change the music or genre?
     *tell me about a time you stopped writing to change the music.  What was going through your mind?  Why were you changing it?  Did it offer you a creative break, a time to reorganize your thoughts?  Were you playing music when you were looking for songs? how did it affect your writing then?
-Have you ever turned off the music when you were writing?
      *if so, why?


-Have you ever written at the Starbucks on campus?

       *if so, how did you feel?  Did it affect your writing? Did it help you?  or hurt you? How so (i.e. the people talking, too much commotion, the music they were playing was atrocious)



-In college, have you ever had to write an in-class essay?
      *if so, explain how you felt.  Do you think listening to music would have helped you think of ideas or help you write faster?



-How is writing without music different? Is it different?
